Lead Mentor — curriculum and teaching

IOTBTECH — a 45-class curriculum, and the engineers who finish it

Problem

Developers finish tutorials and still cannot ship. The gap is not knowledge. It is that nobody has ever reviewed their code, asked them why, or made them fix something under time pressure.

What I built

I have been mentoring here since 2021 — five years of cohorts, taking fellows from no experience at all to applications they have built and deployed themselves. The curriculum below is the current shape of that.

This is the IOTBTECH programme specifically — a full seventeen weeks, for people who have that time. A company bringing me in, or an engineer working one to one, gets something scoped to them instead. What stays the same is the method; what changes is everything else.

The curriculum is real and it is written down, which is more than most training offers.

Five phases over seventeen weeks. Semantic UI and modern styling first, because layout and accessibility are where sloppiness becomes visible. Then deep JavaScript — the event loop, promises, async and await — before TypeScript, deliberately in that order: you learn the logic before you add the type layer, or the types become decoration you cannot reason about.

Phase three is TypeScript and Next.js 15, including server components. Phase four is backend engineering: Node, PostgreSQL and Prisma, authentication and security with Auth.js, then full-stack integration with server actions. Phase five is real-time work over Socket.IO and a capstone across the final two weeks.

Every class has a lab, and the labs are the curriculum's real argument. Audit a legacy website and rewrite it semantically. Build a multi-step job application form. Build a search filter, a crypto price tracker against a live API, a type-safe form builder. Nobody watches me type.

The reason this works is that I am teaching the stack I actually ship in. The TypeScript, the Prisma, the Postgres and the Socket.IO in the syllabus are the same ones in the commerce platform and the marketplace elsewhere on this site. Students hear the real reason a decision was made, including the times it went wrong.

Result

Five years of cohorts and a published 17-week curriculum across 45 classes, taught from the same stack I ship production software in. Twice recognised as an outstanding mentor. Students contribute to the platform they learn on.
